This morning, commence on a city tour of Lisbon, former European Capital of Culture in 1994. Visit Monastery of Jeronimos, a world-class masterpiece of late-Gothic architecture that was constructed in 1496. Plus, immerse in other well-preserved and noteworthy attractions such as Rossio Square, Discovery Monument and a 16th-century Belem Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This evening, you will embark on the Croisi Europe Cruise to start our journey along the Douro River.

This morning, explore Porto the 2nd-largest city in Portugal. The city’s historic centre, Ribeira, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built on the hills overlooking Douro River. This is the city where port wine originated from. Today, take in the sights of the richly decorated Sao Francisco Church, the most important religious monument in Porto that was originally a Gothic church, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And right next door, you will find the Palacio da Bolsa with incredible granite work and magnificent Neo-Arab influences. Continue to Sao Bento Railway Station, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Monument of Portugal. View the blue and white tile panels inside, depicting historical scenes of Portugal, that will surely leave you with some of your best Porto memories.

This morning, arrive at Regua the largest town on the banks of the Douro River in this winegrowing valley. After breakfast, drive to the Portuguese city of Vila Real, and visit the home to the extraordinary Mateus Palace, the building depicted on the Mateus Rosé wine labels. This stunning baroque Mateus Palace here was the home of the last Count of Vila Real; its pinnacled facade, grand stairway, richly appointed interior, and priceless objects on display will amaze you, as will the palace’s enchanting formal gardens featuring cedar-lined walkways, exquisite sculpted hedges and statuary, and serene bodies of water. This afternoon will be spent sailing. Enjoy an evening of Flamenco entertainment on board.

Today, go on a scenic drive to the beautiful city of Salamanca, also known as the Golden City due to its majestic sandstone buildings. Salamanca was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 due to its beautifully preserved buildings. It is home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, founded in 1134, and its main square, bustling with students, is often called the most beautiful in Spain. Pay your homage at University of Salamanca, the oldest university in Spain, the handsome arcaded Plaza Mayor, the heart of Salamanca and one of the most beautiful plazas in all of Spain, and the honey-colored Salamanca Cathedral. After which, there will be free time to explore on your own or enjoy a visit to the local market to sample some regional cuisine.

Continue to Pinhao surrounded by picture-postcard terraced hillsides that are synonymous with the Douro River Valley. It’s slow pace and quiet atmosphere belie the fact that it produces world-renowned port wines; some of the most recognizable names in port production operate wine estates near here. This afternoon, we will stop at two local vineyard and enjoy a wine-tasting session to sample some of the exquisite wine and port wine that you will not find elsewhere. In the evening, celebrate a wonderful trip with your travel companions at a farewell dinner hosted by the captain of the cruise.

Today, visit the sacred pilgrimage town of Lamego and witness the legacy of Moors. Visit the elegant Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, or Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, a baroque wonder dating to the 18th century. This small hilltop chapel is reached via 686 steps up a grand double staircase, interrupted by nine terraces. Along the way, the devout can admire azulejo tiles and decorative urns. Still today, pilgrims often conduct the long upward journey on their knees. Visit the shrine, decorated with exquisite blue-and-white tilework. From the top, you will have spectacular views of the town and its surroundings. Next visit Lamego Cathedral, it is a cathedral built in Gothic style which preserves the bell tower in original square. This afternoon will be spent sailing towards Porto. Enjoy an evening of Fado entertainment on board.

This morning, visit the nation’s first capital Guimaraes, a city beloved to the Portuguese. Originally settled in the 9th-century, the city is often referred to as the birthplace of the Portuguese nation. It was Portugal’s first capital in the 12th century and home to its first king, Afonso Henriques. Enjoy a guided walk through the narrow streets of the city’s medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the main square, you will see palaces and monasteries dating to the 10th century. Next, visit Guimarães Castle, which is considered one of the finest castles in Portugal and is of particular importance in the history of Portugal. Then, continue our visit to the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza. With its gothic architecture blended with Burgundian influences, the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza is simply unique! This afternoon, spend some time at leisure in Porto for photo-taking or shopping.

This morning, disembark from the cruise and before we bid goodbye to Porto, we will visit Sandeman Wine Cellars. At Sandeman Wine Cellars, you will have plenty of artifacts to explore as a fascinating display of paintings and photographs collected over the centuries. Finally, you will have the chance to know one of the most impressive and significant bottle collection in Europe. Here you will discover examples from the mid-17th century and the entire brand’s 200 years of history. Next, continue our journey to Coimbra. Coimbra was the capital of Portugal for around 250 years. The first half-dozen monarchs of Portugal were born in Coimbra. Visit The University of Coimbra, the oldest university in Portugal, and one of the oldest functioning universities in the world. The historic campus is a World Heritage Site. Within this complex, you can visit the beautiful Joanina Library, built during the 18th century in rococo style architecture. Conclude the tour with a visit to The Royal Palace and St. Michael’s Chapel. Then, enjoy a scenic drive back to Lisbon.
