Drive to Japan’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Biwa, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna before going to the beautifully preserved Higashi Chaya District known for its traditional teahouses and geisha entertainment during the Edo period. Then, visit Kenrokuen Garden, hailed by many as one of Japan’s most beautiful landscape gardens. The serene water features and flowering trees against the picturesque teahouses and perfectly manicured garden grounds are perfect for finding that elusive inner peace.

Today, head to Kanazawa’s largest fresh seafood market, Omicho Market. The sprawling network of coloured streets here offer an excellent lineup of local seafood and produce, clothing, flowers, kitchen tools and other specialty products. Embark on a lesson in culture and history afterwards at Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring quaint farmhouses with distinctive steep roofs that resemble clasped hands in prayer. In the evening, enjoy a unique kaiseki dinner clad in a yukata before you wind down with a relaxing beauty bath at an onsen resort in Hida.

After breakfast, explore the charming Takayama Town with its prosperous merchant past and Edo-style buildings and streets. Pick up some unique Hida confectionery and souvenirs as you stroll past the sake breweries and merchant houses adorned with lattice bay windows. Following that, admire the magnificent vistas of the surrounding scenery on the reflective surface of Lake Suwa before paying a visit to Nagano’s oldest shrine – Suwa Shrine – for a glimpse into your future where you may request for your wishes to be granted. It’s snack-time this morning with a hint of Japanese heritage at Kawagoe Old Street. Choose from a myriad of Japanese snacks from candy to sweet potato cakes and rice crackers sold at the merchant houses on stone pavements in this Edo-inspired town. A short distance from this street is the symbol of Kawagoe, Toki no Kane, a bell tower built about 400 years ago which still rings four times throughout the day now. Head for more snacks at Kashiya Yokocho, where those with a sweet tooth will be spoilt for choice with the many traditional Japanese cakes and sweets on sale here. In the evening, cut those purse strings loose at Shinjuku, an extensive shopping and entertainment centre with everything from major department stores to boutique fashion and discount electronic stores.
